Why Iron Ladies of Liberia Is Not Mean Liberation

This week, my political science group homework is about women empowerment and gender equality which means, I’m going to see many inspirational stories from female perspectives for the next 2 classes. My professor told us to watch the documentary film called “The Iron Ladies of Liberia” I got stuck for a moment-hoping this will be another great storyteller from the pearl of Africa. I was wrong, I kinda disappointed because the character of Africa’s female president, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is not as an inspirational as hyped by the western media. Here’s why:

1. She was Involved in War Crimes

Remember, she was one of the biggest donors of National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), the infamous warlord’s rebellion led by Charles Taylor. For who those don’t know who is Charles Taylor, he was the exiled of former President of Liberia where he was strangely used to made an ally with Sirleaf Johnson to topple former Presiden Samuel Doe whom she hated so much for his brutal when he ruled the country. In fact The Truth and Reconcilition Commision (TRC) of Liberia listing her as one of 25 people who should be sanctioned for commiting war crimes and should be barred for any public office for 30 years a head. They accused Sirleaf Johnson helped Taylor in 1980s and allowed General Butt Naked (yeah that’s a person name) to kill at least 20.000 people according to his confession. In fact she admitted her support to Taylor in her biography and did not show any remorse to this accusation.

2. She was Exposed to do Wrongdoing In Panama Papers

The Paradise Papers listed her as one of many politician who setted up a offshores investment managed by legal firm, Appleby. Even tough no accusation of money laundring or tax avoidance (yet), her name on Paradise Papers showing a fact that she is not as a “clean person” as the western media potrayed to be. She set up a company there, then there is something she tried to hide or having an interest to make herself richer – completely a gap compared to majority of her people who starving to death.

3. She is a Genuine Capitalist

The documentary ” Iron Ladies of Liberia” potraying Liberian’s politic under Johnson Sirleaf is collective social activity, where she governed her country directly in to his people for example when she’s going to resolve the workers (firestone workers) problems, she was directly talk to them, she faced the demonstration, anger and give them  answers and solutions. The documentary vividly describe the situation that there is no boundaries between public and private but the reality is, Sirleaf Johnson is just another a Capitalist – she had worked for Citibank (suprise!) and also for Equatorial Bank in the past before went back to Liberia for Senatorial election 1985.

President Sirleaf Johnson had been retired in 2018 and her legacy became one of the most talked nowdays, probably because (one of the reason) is peaceful giving up power – something rarely happen in Liberia’s political scene in the last two decades. The documentary film just another propaganda made by capitalist to influences
